Organization’s History

In 1987, Mrs. Andrée Ménard, missionary sister of the Immaculate-Conception, returning to Canada after 25 years of working in Japan, apprehends the integration difficulties related to poverty, language and isolation, encountered by the newcomers to Montreal. She realizes the need for setting up tools to help them through the difficult process of adapting themselves to the recipient society. Soon thereafter, three young immigrants, a Vietnamese, a Bolivian and a Haitian, involved themselves with Mrs. Andrée Ménard in the project. It is in year 1988 that the organization was founded and the group named it PROMIS, which means:
PROMotion-Intégtation-Société nouvelle
Since its outset, PROMIS’ main goal became to meet the clearly expressed needs of the community. In 1989, the organization requested that the Government of Quebec provide them with the organization’s official registration documents and that Revenue Canada provide them with a registration number for charity purposes.
Since then, PROMIS has not ceased to develop itself. The recognition of its work is clearly proven by the getting of various prices and honorable mentions received throughout the years. These recognitions encourage us to continue our dream that one day "all women, all men and all children will feel accepted, loved, and respected in their rights".
