Kindergarten

Target Clientele
This program is offered to children aged 10 months to 5 years who live in Mountain Sights district.
These children belong to low-income families who live in an isolated sector of Côte-des-Neiges district where services are hardly accessible. Most of the parents possess a low school level, do not speak French, and are not fluent in English.
Goals
- Contribute to the development of these children as regards their French language learning, socialization, psychomotricity, fine motricity, and autonomy
- Develop the needed skills for pre-kindergarten in children aged 4 years who have gone to kindergarten and the preschool workshop.
- Unveil these children’s development constraints, and, when necessary, refer them to an appropriate organization.
- Offer some rest to their parents.

Program subsidized by Health Canada and offered at Mountain Sights Community Center
Saturday School

Conscious of the fact that many of the district’s allophone children experience a serious school delay due to a lack of knowledge of the French language; PROMIS has established a Saturday School.
Within this activity, the child is twinned with a French-speaking mentor-volunteer worker, with whom the child works on his/her greatest difficulties, in French and/or in mathematics.
Moreover, with the aim of preparing and smoothing out the integration of toddlers aged 3 to 5 to the Quebec school system, French language familiarization workshops stimulate younger brothers and sisters of registered pupils.
Finally, in order to carry on the good framing of the children in their homes, we also provide activities of development of parental skills in school support to the children’s parents.
Thus, a privileged relationship and a personalized attention ensure the children’s better school and social integration.
Throughout the weeks of school year 2004-2005, Saturday School has thus received in PROMIS’ premises:
:
- 142 children
- 71 parents
- 20 younger brothers and sisters aged 3 to 5
- 100 volunteer workers
Saturday School constitutes:
- An individual tutorial:
For elementary school pupils from schools of Côte-des-Neiges school district
- A project:
The Team Child-Parent-Volunteer Worker
Activity focused on the child school support, on putting into practice notions acquired with the mentor, and allowing the continuity of this support within the child's parents in their family environnement.
- Workshops with the parents
Three types of activities are offered to children’s parents for the development of skills in school support with their child, i.e. initiation into French, sensitization to their child’s socio-emotional development, and information on various topics and resources related to the family and Quebec schools.
- Workshops for the 3 to 5 year-olds
These workshops are meant to introduce these children to the French language in order to facilitate their school integration.
